Diving in Cancun

Cancun is Mexico's most visited tourist destination, and while most travelers come for the beaches and nightlife, the diving here offers experiences that are genuinely unique in the Caribbean. The star attraction is MUSA — the Museo Subacuatico de Arte — an underwater sculpture museum featuring over 500 life-sized human figures placed on the sea floor between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, the sculptures serve as both art installations and artificial reefs, now covered in coral growth and surrounded by tropical fish. Beyond MUSA, Cancun offers natural reef diving along the northern section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The Manchones reef system is the area's most popular natural dive site, with shallow coral gardens, a chance of nurse sharks, and a famous underwater cross and flag sculpture. The underwater landscapes here are varied — from sandy flats dotted with coral heads to more developed reef structures teeming with marine life. Cancun is also one of only a few places in the world where you can reliably encounter bull sharks in the wild. From November through March, large female bull sharks congregate in the waters near Playa del Carmen and Cancun, offering divers an unforgettable encounter with one of the ocean's most impressive predators. These are organized, safety-conscious dives led by experienced guides who know the sharks' behavior patterns. While the cenotes are a longer drive from Cancun than from Playa del Carmen or Tulum, they are absolutely worth the journey. Cenote diving includes hotel pickup from Cancun. Ocean dives meet the boat at the Aquafun marina, with no pickup, so you can still experience both ocean diving and cenote diving during your vacation.

Cancun Diving — FAQ

Common questions about ocean diving in Cancun.

MUSA (Museo Subacuatico de Arte) is an underwater sculpture museum located in the waters between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. It features over 500 life-sized human sculptures by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, placed on the sea floor as both art installations and artificial reefs. The sculptures are now covered in coral growth and surrounded by tropical fish, creating a surreal diving experience unlike anything else in the world.

Bull shark season runs from November through March. During this period, large female bull sharks migrate to the warm Caribbean waters off Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Our bull shark dives are led by experienced guides who understand shark behavior and prioritize safety. Advanced Open Water certification is recommended for bull shark encounters.

For cenote diving, yes: we provide free hotel pickup from every hotel in Cancun's hotel zone, downtown Cancun, and surrounding areas including Puerto Juarez, with earlier pickups to account for the drive time. For ocean diving, divers meet the boat at the Aquafun marina and there is no pickup.

Cancun offers unique ocean diving experiences you cannot find elsewhere, including the MUSA underwater museum and seasonal bull shark encounters. The natural reefs are also healthy and vibrant. While the dramatic wall dives of Cozumel are not replicated here, Cancun's diving has a character all its own and is absolutely worth experiencing.

Combine With Cenote Diving

The Riviera Maya is the only place on Earth where you can dive ancient underground cenote caverns and vibrant Caribbean reefs in the same vacation. Add a cenote dive day for the complete experience.
